Thanks to countries such as the European Union, Russia, Mexico, Belgium, The Netherlands etc banning the sale of seal products the demand for seal pelts has dropped dramatically resulting in the value of a pelt dropping from $100 in 2006 to just $18 dollars now. As a result of this the Canadian Goverment are now spending more tax payers money promoting and supporting the seal hunt than the hunt brings in

 

They are also planning a World Trade Organization (WTO) challenge of the EU ban. They are even trying to open new doors, like in China where they are trying to sell the Chinese goverment on seal meat

 

They are still determined to continue with the hunt despite the fact that countless baby seals have already died because the sea ice is rapidly melting. They have set this years (2012) harp seal kill quota to an extreme 400,000 seals, even though last year many of the seals that were killed were simply left on the ice and not taken away by the hunters

 

In the last ten years more than 2 milllion baby harp seals have been killed 98% of which were younger than three months old
